Carlisle
Carlisle is often treated as a gateway to somewhere else, but the city deserves time of its own. Its castle, cathedral, museums and historic streets tell the story of a place shaped by Romans, Border Reivers, royal prisoners and centuries of life beside the Scottish border. The centre is compact and easy to explore on foot, with plenty of cafés, pubs, restaurants and shops between the main attractions. It also makes a practical base for discovering Hadrian’s Wall, the Solway Coast, the Eden Valley and the northern Lake District.
